NCBA CLUSA to host second webinar in series with USDA

NCBA CLUSA will host the second installment in a webinar series presented by Lillian Salerno, administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Business-Cooperative Service, on July 10, 2014 at 1 p.m.

The ongoing webinar series convenes the cooperative stakeholder community to hear directly from Administrator Salerno and her staff about the strategic direction her agency is taking as it implements administration and department priorities and initiatives, including the recent Farm Bill.

NCBA CLUSA will moderate the discussion and provide a legislative update on the status of fiscal year 2015 funding for the Rural Cooperative Development Grant program. The USDA is expected to overview RCDG funding initiatives for fiscal year 2014 and explain how the department’s focus on poverty alleviation, Promise Zones, community economic development and co-op services inform the program.

  THUMB 01 New York City invests $1.2 million in worker cooperatives

A proclamation from the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio declaring June 21 “Worker Cooperative Day” in New York City.In a move recognizing the role of co-ops to create quality jobs and spur local economic growth, the New York City Council today voted to approve the city’s annual budget, which includes a historic $1.2 million initiative to fund the development of worker cooperatives.

“This budget invests in our city’s future and begins to address inequality, all while strengthening our long-term fiscal health,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement yesterday.

The allocation is the largest investment in worker cooperatives by any U.S. city government to date, and backs up the city's earlier action to name June 21 the first annual "Worker Cooperative Day," according to the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives (USFWC).

NCBA CLUSA Vice President for Advocacy Alan Knapp guested on an episode of Congressman Chaka Fattah’s public affairs show, A Capitol Idea, dedicated to spurring job creation and economic growth through cooperative development.

With its entrepreneurial instinct and economic opportunity, the U.S. is primed to foster cooperative growth, Knapp said. “More and more people want to own their own businesses; they want to have a vote and a say in those businesses, so co-ops are really growing.”

When it comes to raising awareness of the scope of the movement and improving its profile and potential, there’s still work to be done, Knapp and Fattah agreed.

The Texas non-profit HomeCare Foundation has launched a crowd-funding campaign to launch eQuality HomeCare, a worker-owned caregiver cooperative with offices at Eden Hill Communities in New Braunfels, Texas.

Typically underpaid and under-appreciated, in-home caregivers live paycheck-to-paycheck and rarely stay long at the job, which spells a parade of staff coming through the doors of families in need of help in the home.

With $144 million in assets, the Wisconsin-based Park City Credit Union provides financial products and services to Northern Wisconsin. Established in 1938, the credit union now offers online banking with bill pay. The Credit Union National Association published this news release about Park City CU’s efforts to highlight the benefits of credit union membership:

Park City Credit Union is using a $7,000 grant from the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation and additional funding from Wisconsin Valley Chapter of Credit Unions to advertise and deliver the value of the credit union difference to local small businesses.
