At Quebec Summit workshop, NCBA CLUSA leads debate on overcoming challenges to cooperative development Special Feature Banner

The “Blueprint for a Cooperative Decade” envisions that by 2020, co-ops will be the acknowledged economic leader, the preferred business model and the fastest-growing enterprise worldwide, but gaps in co-op-specific legislation and education remain a concern for cooperative leaders in the U.S.

At a workshop led by NCBA CLUSA on Monday afternoon at the 2014 International Summit of Cooperatives in Quebec City, Canada, attendees discussed ways to clear these hurdles to cooperative development.

One challenge is an inconsistent legislative framework for cooperative development. Currently, approximately half of the states in the U.S. have co-op statutes.

  THUMB 01 2015 Inductees to Cooperative Hall of Fame announced

Four outstanding cooperative leaders will receive the cooperative community’s highest honor on May 6, 2015, when they are inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame.

The inductees are consumer cooperative advocate and educator Ann Hoyt, retired professor and department chair of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Consumer Science; cooperative agri-business leader Daniel T. Kelly, former GROWMARK, Inc., board chair; cooperative educator William J. Nelson, vice president of Corporate Citizenship and president of the CHS Foundation; and cooperative development strategist Judy Ziewacz, former executive director of the Cooperative Development Foundation.

A Memorandum of Understanding signed in September of 2014 between NCBA CLUSA and Texas A&M AgriLife Research solidifies a five-year collaboration in the areas of agricultural research, food security and development to foster effective international agricultural development programs.

As part of the Texas A&M University system, Texas A&M AgriLife Research is the state’s leading research agency in agriculture, natural resources and life sciences. The agency has conducted research on pressing agricultural and ranching issues since the late nineteenth century, including grass and forage production, feeding of dairy and beef cattle, and plant diseases and animal parasites. Other critical areas of research include enhanced crop nutrition, renewable energy and improved air and water quality.

  THUMB 01 CUNA celebrates 100 Million credit union memberships at Nationals Park

In June, credit unions surpassed 100 million members nationwide. A team from the Credit Union National Association was on hand September 26 to celebrate the milestone and advocate for "A Smarter Choice" at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.:
Credit unions and the 100 million memberships milestone were on full display at Friday's game between the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins.


The Credit Union National Administration had two booths at the game, passing out slap koozies and other credit union materials to those in attendance, with help from volunteers from local credit unions.
