Royal Visit in East TimorRoyal Visit in East Timor

(January 17, 2014)

At the invitation of the Prime Minister of East Timor, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn attended the ceremonial launch of a United Nations project to eradicate famine and hunger from Timor-Leste. During her visit, Her Royal Highness (HRH) was hosted by NCBA CLUSA at their agricultural training center and was very impressed by the operation of the Café Cooperative Timor (CCT), NCBA CLUSA’s flagship project in East Timor.

The CCT cooperative is the largest private employer in East Timor with 23,000 famers, 350 full time staff, employing a seasonal workforce of nearly 3,000. The Princess was equally impressed with the healthcare system established by CCT for its cooperative farmers. Using proceeds from coffee sales, CCT established Clinica Café Timor, a rural healthcare network of clinics and mobile health services to provide healthcare for marginalized people in the rural coffee growing regions who do not have access to government health services. Currently the system serves more than one sixth of East Timor’s population.

Clinic Café Timor is now the largest non-governmental health care provider in rural East Timor, which has treated over 1.8 million Timorese people since opening, significantly improving the health of member families.
