Building on the success of the current program with 42 centers in Ethiopia serving 10,000 ICT personnel, the extension will train technical staff for 50 new centers. Communication Cooperative International (CCI) will also train technical staff and leaders of 60 Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOS), also known as credit unions, to increase the use of technology for financial management and services in semi-urban areas in Ethiopia, currently lacking these abilities.

These SACCOS will partner with the 50 new ICT training centers for ongoing technical support and training. The program has enabled trainees to competently conduct repair and maintenance of their own computers, office machines and network systems. These ICT Centers have become repair service centers for their communities leading to revenue generation and technical sustainability.

The project continues to succeed with CCI’s mission to increase access to ICTs through cooperative and community-based enterprises.

“We are confident that this technical assistance, capacity building and training program will make meaningful inroads in helping advance the ability of SACCOs and Community ICT Centers to carry out their missions,” said Mebratu Tsegaye, CCI Executive Director. “As well, it will provide an opportunity to test and if necessary to fine tune an approach to capacity building that can be replicated throughout Ethiopia.”

This two-year extension allows other partnerships to also expand. CCI will partner with the first union for SACCOs in Ethiopia representing over 100,000 members, the Addis Ababa Savings and Credit Cooperatives Union (AASCCU). AASCCU approached CCI with the request for SACCO technical training after it saw the success of the first years of the project.
