Shared Services and Purchasing for INGOs – A New Way Forward for Competitiveness?

In today’s economy, small can be beautiful, but it's hard to compete against large businesses and organizations that have economies of scale. This is true whether you're a family business or a non-governmental organization. This session will bring together executive leaders from the International NGO community who are faced with a rapidly changing environment—fewer resources, increased competition and more stringent regulations—and CEOs of purchasing cooperatives, a model used by business, government and schools to collectively purchase inventory and share common services such as accounting, insurance, benefits, training, marketing and others. This model has saved many small businesses, allowing them to come together in order to compete. Many well-known brands are purchasing cooperatives including ACE Hardware, True Value, Ocean Spray, Shoprite, Carpet One and Best Western. What can INGOs learn from the purchasing cooperative experience? How are they organized? How do you start one? What kinds of services are shared? What are the benefits and challenges? Could this be a model for INGOs to come together to share services, such as grants and contracts, compliance, accounting, human resources, insurance and other benefits?

Join us for breakfast and learn from purchasing cooperative experts about how the model works, what the needs of the development sector are, and whether it could be relevant for the sector.

Note: This is a bonus session for IMPACT Conference attendees and free of charge for international development practitioners. Register to attend here.
