State of the Union

President Echoes Cooperative Movement, Focuses on Economic Mobility and Consumer Empowerment

The President in his State of the Union address to the American people tonight made it very clear that one of the many goals of his Administration will be to focus on growing the economy, strengthening the middle class, and empowering those who want to move ahead in this economy. The National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA CLUSA) and the cooperative movement across America embodies the kind of economic mobility and consumer empowerment  that President Obama has emphasized tonight.  Initiatives that tackle poverty alleviation, such as Promise Zones, could be a prime example of collaboration between the Administration and NCBA CLUSA, collaboration that enables the cooperative community to lend its assistance expertise in pursuit of this worthy goal.

The need to address growing economic inequalities are very real concerns in some parts of this country as the economy continues to rebound from recession and remain constant challenges for people in developing nations abroad as well.  The cooperative model has long been a viable economic alternative and a sound financial choice for individuals in many communities in America and around the world to connect them to better livelihoods, jobs, and opportunity.  NCBA CLUSA and its members look forward to working with the Administration and Congress on the many ways cooperative development, at home and abroad, can support and advance federal policy. We stand ready to help offer our assistance in convening the many cooperative sectors toward that effort.
